MARLOES VAN DE VELDE
– ABSTRACT ART THAT EXPOSES WHAT STAYS BENEATH THE SURFACE –

ABOUT ME
With a background in fashion design, I’ve always been drawn to the tactile language of form — structure, volume, tension. Over time, this fascination shifted from garments to paper: a material that allows me to work more intuitively and conceptually. I now focus on creating embossed works that explore inner tension, emotional pressure, and identity.
I use abstract linework and reliëf to express what often remains hidden beneath the surface — subtle, shifting energies that shape who we are. Paper is both delicate and strong, and I push its limits to reflect the contradictions we carry within ourselves. My work is a quiet confrontation with the invisible — calm on the outside, but full of movement beneath.

INNER WORLD
My work explores the subtle interplay between control and emotion. Rather than illustrating emotions directly, I allow form and surface to suggest what lies beneath. The tactile, often understated appearance of the work stands in contrast to the complexity it seeks to express. It’s this contradiction — between surface calm and inner pressure — that drives the visual language I explore.
I’m particularly interested in how structure and distortion coexist, how boundaries hold and blur, and how identity forms in the space between clarity and ambiguity.
Through this, I seek to create work that invites introspection without prescribing meaning.
